NYC Pride organizes the annual Pride March to commemorate the Stonewall uprising of June 28, 1969. In recent years, Pride in NYC has become a joyous and festive event. But it’s important to remember its roots are born of struggle, and its name is a rejection of the shame inflicted by a heteronormative society that denied basic human rights to LGBTQiA persons for the majority of our history as a nation. It’s especially important to remember this reality in this year when the hard-won rights of this community are again under open attack. Stand on the side of human rights this Pride month. Stand with the heirs of Stonewall for justice and freedom of expression.
