Seeking a Better World Together

February 2018

Author gbakoulis, Written Feb 8, 2018

During February we approach and enter the Lenten season together and with God and Christ. We continue to grow as a congregation with our Transitional Pastor, Rev. Stephen Phelps, and our Minister of Music, Eunjung Ahn. Always, we cherish times spent together. Please join us as often as you can, and invite others to share in our fellowship.

Whether you are a longtime or new member or are considering making Second Presbyterian Church your spiritual home, we hope you will find ways to engage with us. Please call the church office at 212.749.1700 or speak to any church member if you have questions.

Worship

We seek God and practice a welcoming faith, treasuring our times together in God’s presence. We worship on Sundays at 10:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Children leave for Sunday School at 10:30 a.m. with their teacher, Pamela Hahn. Following worship (11:30 a.m.), we gather for Coffee Hour in the Carnegie Library.

All members of the congregation are encouraged to assist with worship as lector, beadle, greeter, or offering collector. Please see our Worship Coordinator for February, Neal Boswell, if you’d like to assist.

Sunday, February 4: Worship, 10:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary, with Holy Communion; Rev. Stephen Phelps preaching; Eunjung Ahn, Minister of Music.

Sunday, February 11, Transfiguration Sunday: Worship, 10:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Rev. Stephen Phelps preaching; Eunjung Ahn, Minister of Music. Ordination and installation of deacons and elders, and recognition of the trustees whose terms have changed.

Wednesday, February 14: Ash Wednesday service, 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. We celebrate the beginning of Lent at this evening worship service.  Rev. Phelps will offer the imposition of ashes, and for anyone desiring an alternative symbol, an elder will offer a touch with water from the baptismal font.  The service will conclude with a celebration of Holy Communion.  Rev. Phelps shares the following thoughts about the service:

The simple service will invoke the Spirit of God in a manner distinct from a Sunday morning service.  The songs and scriptures, the prayers and communion call disciples of Christ to renewed discipline for life in Christ.  Ashes on the forehead will be offered to those who desire to be marked by this ancient symbol of humility and hope. The ashes on the head signify an open, un-fearing acceptance of our mortality–that though we all go down to dust, nevertheless we trust in God who is leading us, even through the valley of the shadow of death, even to death. The symbol of the ashes can help a Christian reconfirm a light and joyous being, gracefully in touch with God and God’s creation, neither afraid to enjoy the goodness of the things of the flesh, nor afraid to let all things go at God’s bidding.

Sunday, February 18, first Sunday of Lent: Worship, 10:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary; Rev. Stephen Phelps preaching; Eunjung Ahn, Minister of Music.

Sunday, February 25, second Sunday of Lent: Worship, 10:15 a.m. in the Sanctuary; Rev. Stephen Phelps preaching; Eunjung Ahn, Minister of Music. Following worship, we will have a special coffee hour to celebrate Constance Campbell on the 50th anniversary of her membership at Second Presbyterian Church!

Pastoral Care During the Transition

During this period of transition, Nancy Hughes, Karen Amrhein, and Elaine Song will serve as contact people for members and regular attendees to call when there is an immediate need to be shared. Examples of needs are hospitalizations, surgeries, deaths, or crises for church members or their family members. When contacted, Nancy, Elaine, or Karen will then learn how we as a congregation may best help someone and learn what information may be shared with Steve Phelps and with our congregation. The idea of having contact numbers was thought of at a meeting we had on ministering to each other in September. During this meeting, we discussed the importance of supporting each other.
